The central area, boasting wide streets is surrounded by parklands, containing lakes, gardens and sporting arenas. The city has an ideal setting, between the Mount Lofty Ranges and the ocean. All parts of the city have a close proximity to the sea and the hills. There are 32km of wide sandy beaches, stretching from Outer Harbor to Kingston Park. Adelaide sits on both sides of the River Torrens, and central area around the river's lake is Elder Park. This forms part of a linear park system which can be followed along the river's entire length from its exit at Torrens Gorge to the sea. Adelaide qualifies as one of the best planned cities of the world. Its architect, Colonel William Light, laid it out in 1836 on a square mile grid pattern, with wide streets and a buffer zone of green encircling the entire city. SA was not a prison colony but a 'province', settled by free people (mostly from the south of England, but many also from Germany) under the auspices of the SA Company. Within a few years of its foundation it was only saved from economic collapse by the discovery of copper at Kapunda and Burra.
