This historic town was named after George Fife Angas, one of the founders of South Australia. Developed as an agricultural and viticultural district, with vineyards and fruit orchards now prominent. The Angas family were the major settlers here for many generations and one of their homes, Collingrove, just outside the town, is now owned by the National Trust.
