Pop Nominal. (371km N Brisbane) A coral cay at the southernmost tip of the Great Barrier Reef. First charted by Captain Thomas Stewart aboard the Lady Elliot in 1816. In 1969 after deprivation through mining and feral goats regeneration of the native flora and fauna began with the construction of a primitive resort and visits by the first wave of eco tourists. Now the island is lushly vegetated with coastal forest and dense grasslands. Lady Elliot offers reef walks at low tide in only centimetres of water and is renowned as being a snorkellers, scuba divers and bird watchers paradise. There are tours to the reef crest in a glass bottom boat. Turtle or bird watching season October to April. Whale watching season June to November. ACTIVITIES: Bird watching, Fishing, Scuba diving, Snorkelling, Swimming, Whale watching (In season). ACCESS: Car via Bruce Hwy to Hervey Bay or Bundaberg. Daily air service from Hervey Bay & Bundaberg.
