Situated on the shores of Murat Bay, Ceduna is the focal point and business centre for the far west coast and the hub of a large cereal growing area. The area was discovered by a Dutch sailing vessel in 1627. Matthew Flinders, Nicolas Baudin and Edward John Eyre all passed through this district. Ceduna was surveyed in 1896 and proclaimed five years later. For many years the town was known as Murat Bay. The jetty was built in 1902 and the railway line was opened in 1915.
