Pop 1,560. (82km S Adelaide). See map on page 07?14, ref E4. The historic township of Port Elliot is situated on the coastline between the towns of Victor Harbor and Middleton. Port Elliot is well known for its swimming beach at Horseshoe Bay and its antiques. Selected in 1850 as the site for the ocean port of the Murray River trade. The choice was unfortunate as the bay was not protected enough, and following several shipwrecks, the anchorage was transferred to Granite Island at Victor Harbor in 1864. Australia's first public railway terminated here; it was horse drawn and transported cargo from Goolwa to Port Elliot. FESTIVALS: Port Elliot Train Show (Jan), Southern Agricultural Show (Oct) . ACTIVITIES: Antique shop, Bicycle trail, Bowls, Fishing, Sailing, Surfing, Swimming (beach), Tennis, Whale watching (Jun-Oct). ACCESS: Car via the Adelaide to Victor Harbor Rd.
