Pop 4,000. (52km SE Adelaide). See map on page 07?14, ref G2. A heritage town, situated on the Angas River. The area was first settled by Scottish immigrants in 1839. It was named Strathalbyn by one of its original settlers Dr John Rankine. Strath being a Gaelic word meaning 'a valley with a river running through it', and Albyn being a corruption of the word Albion, from the Albion Iron Mills in Glasgow, of which the doctor was a large shareholder.
