It was named Strathalbyn by one of its original settlers Dr John Rankine. Strath being a Gaelic word meaning 'a valley with a river running through it', and Albyn being a corruption of the word Albion, from the Albion Iron Mills in Glasgow, of which the doctor was a large shareholder.
