A small settlement located in the Northern Flinders Ranges, the centre for the privately owned Arkaroola Sanctuary. Adjacent to the Gammon Ranges. The area was earmarked for pastoral development as early as 1857. After many chequered years, it settled down to serious progress in 1937, when two brothers named Greenwood took it over. In 1968, it was purchased by Reg and Griselda Sprigg. Reg Sprigg, a former geologist, saw a unique opportunity to retain its unspoilt character as a privately owned sanctuary. ACTIVITIES: Bush walking. ACCESS: Car via the Hawker to Marree Rd, veer east at Parachilna or Copley. Take the Barrier Hwy, turn north at Yunta. Roads into the area are narrow and rough.
