Pop 2,624. (858km NW Adelaide). See map on page 08?14, ref F3. Coober Pedy's lunar-like landscape has attracted many visitors who dig for opals or observe how opal is mined, cut and polished. Many opal miners escape the fierce heat of summer by living underground in elaborate dugouts. Coober Pedy is recognised as the largest producer of opal in the world. Dating back to 1915, it is South Australia's biggest and oldest opal mining town. The name is thought to be derived from the Aboriginal words 'Kupa', meaning uninitiated person or white man and 'Piti', meaning waterhole or hole; hence Kupa Piti, white man's hole or burrow. FESTIVALS: Coober Pedy Gymkhana & Races (Oct). ACTIVITIES: Gem fossicking, Golf, Horse riding, Horse racing, Motor racing, Swimming (pool), Tennis. ACCESS: Car via the Stuart Hwy.
