Many opal miners escape the fierce heat of summer by living underground in elaborate dugouts. Coober Pedy is recognised as the largest producer of opal in the world. Dating back to 1915, it is South Australia's biggest and oldest opal mining town. The name is thought to be derived from the Aboriginal words 'Kupa', meaning uninitiated person or white man and 'Piti', meaning waterhole or hole; hence Kupa Piti, white man's hole or burrow.
