In 1982 the railway line between Crystal Brook and Merriton was converted and has now made Crystal Brook the central link up point of Australian National Railways to the capital cities of Perth, Adelaide, Sydney and Alice Springs. The town was named after the water course located on its northern outskirts. The explorer Edward John Eyre named this water course in 1840. The town was proclaimed in 1874.
