A large rural service town in the centre of a prosperous farming community, the main crops being wheat, barley and field peas, with the largest receival centre in the southern hemisphere. It is also a rail junction for trains carrying lead and zinc concentrates from Broken Hill for processing at Port Pirie, or shipping to Tasmania and overseas. Gladstone is named after one of the most illustrious statesmen in the history of the British Empire. The town was surveyed and laid out in 1871, when Gladstone's career was at its peak.
