Pop 380. (673km N Adelaide). See map on page 08?14, ref H4. Small service centre for the surrounding pastoral area. The commencement of the famous Birdsville and Oodnadatta Tracks. Up until 1980, it was the major break-of-gauge station on the 'Ghan' rail journey to Alice Springs. The new line now runs 190km to the west. Marree was Australia's major centre for the camel trains which were the main means of transporting supplies and heavy loads in the outback.
