Roads from Adelaide, the Flinders Ranges, Alice Springs, Perth and Whyalla all intersect here. One of the oldest towns in the north, it came into being because of its shipping potential for the early pastoralists and miners of the northern areas. Road transport was hazardous in the 1800s making it necessary for shipping to be used wherever possible. The advent of the railway commenced a new era for Port Augusta. It has become a major concern in an Australian-wide railway system.
