Today, Port Pirie is a thriving industrial and commercial centre and boasts large fishing and market gardening industries, as well as wheat, barley and dairy production and communications networks. South Australia's first provincial city, it is widely recognised as the 'Hub of the Southern Flinders Ranges'. An important centre for the nation's major railway system. Beginning in 1845, it was the establishment of rail links from Crystal Brook and Cockburn to Port Pirie in 1888, that gained the town prominence as a major shipping port. In 1889, three smelters were built near Port Pirie to refine the ore being railed from the Broken Hill mines, now the site of the world's largest lead smelter.
