As from Feb 1 1982, the Woomera township officially became an SA country town and, in consequence, permits are no longer required to enter it. However, entry to the Range Area and Airfield is still restricted. Notices advise motorists of security requirements. Established in 1947 as a launch base for experimental rockets and space craft. Woomera is still periodically active in space-related activities, during 1995 for instance, it was used for six scientific launches by NASA. It is now used as a residential support centre for a Joint Defence Facility.
