Recognised as the 'Capital of the Alps', Omeo is one of Victoria's all season tourist areas. The township has many old notable buildings, all rich in local history. The Aboriginal interpretation of 'Omeo' means 'mountains'. Gateway to the fields of Dinner Plain and Mt Hotham. Pastoralists settled the area in 1832 and in 1851 the discovery of gold led hundreds of prospectors to the district. Livingston Creek was re-routed and used to sluice away gravel cliffs in the area known as the Oriental Claims. With the ultimate decline in gold mining, settlers established large sheep and cattle runs which formed the basis for the township's development.
