Pop 320. (303km E Melbourne) The island is one of a series of sand barriers built up over time as the ocean reached from the coastline around Eagle Point, Tambo Bluff and Kalimna. Other barriers formed were Boole Poole Peninsula, Sperm Whale Head and eventually the Ninety Mile Beach. Home to over 160 bird species and many species of ground orchids. The wetlands at the north eastern end of the island are valuable refuges and feeding areas for a number of species of waders and waterfowls, including the White Egret. White bellied sea eagles frequently nest in the vicinity of these wetlands. A large koala population is visible in the open forests of coastal manna gums. ACTIVITIES: Boat ramp, Boating, Bush walking, Canoeing, Fishing, Jetty, Sailing, Scenic drives, Swimming (lake), Water skiing. ACCESS: Car ferry from Paynesville.
