Bendigo is a modern provincial city, situated in the fertile valleys of the Campaspe and Loddon Rivers. Since the end of the gold era many large industries have been established. Numerous parks, gardens and recreation reserves, totalling 198ha, typify progressive town planning. The Bendigo of today is a complete contrast to its previous 'gold rush' era. Buildings such as the Post Office, Law Courts and Town Hall with their ornate architecture, reflect this rich period of development. Bendigo was founded after the discovery of gold in 1851. Through the years, such famous Bendigo mines as Central Nell Gwynne, Ironbark, North, South and Central Deborah, and Victoria Quartz contributed greatly to the total 595 million grams of gold won in the area. Production of gold ceased in 1954 with the closure of the Central Deborah Gold Mine. FESTIVALS: Bendigo 10,000 Madison (Mar), Easter Fair (Easter), Victorian Balloon Fiesta (Apr), Bendigo Show, Heritage Uncorked (Oct), Bendigo Cup (Nov). ACTIVITIES: Bowls, Croquet, Golf, Greyhound racing, Harness racing, Horse racing, Swimming, Tennis. ACCESS: Car via the Calder, Midland & McIvor Hwys. Daily rail and coach services from Melbourne.
