Pop 800. (254km NW Melbourne) A small town situated on the shore of Lake Boort, in a large wheat and wool growing district. The area is noted for the great number of birds that make their home on the lakes. The pioneers Henry Godfrey and Thomas Bear, took up a pastoral run in 1843. The area developed in the 1870s when closer settlement occured. 'Boort' is Aboriginal for 'smoke on the hill'. FESTIVALS: Agricultural Show (Oct).
