It is a major entry point to the Goldfields Tourist Route. The town was first known as Mt Alexander during the 1850s and later named after Viscount Castlemaine. Gold was first discovered there in 1851 and for ten years an average of 198,100g (7,000oz) was taken to Melbourne each week.
