Pop 650. (174km NW Melbourne). See map on page 2?9, ref J12. Township positioned between the Loddon and Avoca Rivers. It is the centre of an extensive pastoral district and is a main wheat storage depot for northern and central Victoria. The town is famous for 'The Welcome Stranger', the world's largest gold nugget found at nearby Moliagul. Gold was discovered in 1852 and as a result the township grew. Archibald McDougall named the area after a castle in Scotland. Sheep runs were established and later wheat production became the town's main industry. FESTIVALS: Gold Rush Festival (Jun).
