Pop 7,365. (164km NW Melbourne). See map on page 2?9, ref H13. Old goldmining town located on the Pyrenees Hwy, now a developing industrial centre and rail junction. Maryborough was founded by gold prospectors in 1854. The population increased, and as a result Police Commissioner Daly established a camp here. He named it after a town in Ireland. Charles Hotham, the Governor of Victoria in 1853, said he would 'unlock the lands' so that the diggers could have access to the squatters' property. This became known as the 'Ballarat Promise'. Goldmining ceased in 1918 and the establishment of secondary industries has ensured the town's growth. FESTIVALS: Highland Gathering, Maryborough Gift (Jan), Gold 'n Wattle Festival (Sep), RACV Energy Breakthrough (Nov). ACCESS: Car via the Western Hwy. Daily coach service available from Melbourne via Ballarat or Castlemaine.
