Horsham was established as a place to cross the Wimmera River. Major Thomas Mitchell is the man honoured for founding the Wimmera, and his reports of ample vegetation and water encouraged people like James Darlot to take up lease runs. Darlot had a lease of 40,000 acres and named the area after a fondly remembered town in England in the1840s. The original name for Horsham was Wopetbungundilar, a name given by the Kooris before the Europeans arrived.
