Pop 912. (304km NW Melbourne) A pastoral grain growing area located on the shore of Lake Marma. In the 1870s, Murtoa was settled by German pioneers. A flour mill was set up in 1876 by William Thomas. Much of the produce was then exported to overseas ports. Murtoa, originally called 'Marma Gully', is named after the Aboriginal word meaning 'home of the lizards'.
