St Arnaud was established in 1855 with the discovery of gold north of the town. No bank existed at the time so the gold was sent to Avoca, a dangerous trip avoiding bushrangers. St Arnaud was named after Jacques Le Roy de St Arnaud, Colonel-in-Chief of the French forces during the Crimean war. The streets were surveyed in 1861 by the explorer W M Wills.
