On the eastern side of Barwon River estuary, overlooking Bass Strait. Ocean Grove was settled in 1854 by William Bonsey. Leather tanning became an important industry, using wattle bark as a major commodity. The town was modelled on its name sake in New Jersey (USA). These attempts failed and Ocean Grove prospered following the farming rush. By the turn of the century, fishing had become the major industry.
