Pop 1,063. (274km NE Melbourne). See map on page 5?9, ref R11. Historic town in an agricultural and pastoral district. Pastoralists were the first settlers in the area. Originally known as Black Dog Creek, this was later changed to Chiltern, named after the Chiltern Hills in England. During the 1850s gold was discovered and settlement centred along Conness Street. Mining operations were profitable until the early 1900s. Quartz and all other mining had ceased by the 1910s.
