The town developed around the hotel, a staging post where the Cobb & Co coaches took fresh horses, on the exhausting three day trip to the Bendigo and Castlemaine diggings. The name was derived from the town being at the northern end of the Black Forest. Travellers were relieved if they managed to retain their possessions this far, because the forest was a notorious haunt for bushrangers.
