Pop 200. (1030km N Brisbane) Calen is a thriving community with St Helen's Beach as a popular holiday and festive centre noted for its fishing and prawning. Calen nestles at the foothills of the Clark Range with beautiful National Parks at its doorstep. . Calen is one of the first settlements on the north coast. The first settler in this district was 1918, Sir William Macartney who took up the land from the O'Connell River to Scrubby Creek. As the north coast rail line was finished in 1923, the golden spike was driven near Mount Pelion, 10km south of Calen. The farms quickly opened up the land and the cane was established and sent by rail to the sugar mills in Mackay. FESTIVALS: Wintermoon Festival (Cameron's Pocket, Apr/May).
