Howlong lies beside the Murray River and developed around the place where Major Thomas Mitchell and his party crossed the river in 1836. Getting across the river is a lot less strenuous today, although you will find that there are a total of nine bridges to cross on the Howlong route! The area features many buildings dating from the middle of last century, notably the shearing shed at nearby Brocklesby Station which was the model for Tom Roberts's famous painting, Shearing the Rams.
