Located in an agricultural and timber milling region, Rushworth is a notable tourist town, made popular due to the discovery of gold in the 1850s. Relics from the era are available for inspection. Grawlers Hill Lookout Tower also provides scenic views of Rushworth and the Goulburn Valley. The name Rushworth evolved from gold commissioner Daley's statement that it was a 'goldrush worthwhile'. Gold was discovered in 1853 and continued until 1872 when deep lead mining began. By the 1880s, fifty rich gold reefs were being worked in the area.
