Situated on the banks of the Murray River, it is a major destination for international visitors and tourists from all over Australia. Visitors can cruise the scenic river on historic paddlesteamers, or tour the widely acclaimed Pioneer Settlement. The town was amusingly named by Major Mitchell who in 1836, after spending a restless night awake due to swans on a nearby lagoon, named it Swan Hill. Much of the surrounding land was taken up by graziers. Swan Hill became the only fording place on the river. A punt commenced operation in 1847 and as a result, river trade continued to boost the growth of the town during the 1870s-80s.
