Twin town to Albury, situated on the south bank of the Murray River at the junction of the Hume and Murray Valley Hwys. Wodonga is an Aboriginal name signifying bullrushes. In 1836 Charles and Paul Huon arrived to establish the Wodonga Station beside Bonegilla. Major Thomas Mitchell was the second explorer to pass through north-eastern Victoria in 1836 and held a number of stations in the Murray Valley. The town was first surveyed in 1852 and was known as Belvoir Township until 1869. In 1876 the Shire of Wodonga was created and gained rural city status in 1973.
