Byron Bay is one of the most popular destinations on Australia's east coast - locals are content to share their piece of paradise with the reputed half to a million visitors that visit Byron Bay each year. Cape Byron, the most easterly point of the Australian mainland, was named in 1770 by Captain James Cook. The sheltered bay north of the cape was charted in 1828 and became known as Byron Bay. Naturally sheltered and protected from southerly winds, the bay looked like an ideal place for a port; however easterly winds could whip up heavy seas and no less than twelve ships and two jetties were destroyed before a lighthouse was built on the cape to prevent shipping hazards.
