Pop 8,341. (1535km N Perth). See map on page #EW3#, ref D10. Aptly named for the Aboriginal word meaning 'good country'. It lies beside Nickol Bay and is the youngest and fastest-growing town in the Pilbara. The name was given to the original station established there in the 1860s by the first owners. The town came into being in the late 1960s due to the tremendous growth of the iron-ore industry, the need for a new regional centre, and the lack of further available land in Dampier. ACTIVITIES: Bush walking, Scenic drives, Swimming. ACCESS: Car via the North West Coastal Hwy.
