It is in the centre of a rich pastoral district. Charleville is the largest town in the south west of the Outback Queensland region. Discovered by early explorer Mr Edmund Kennedy in 1847, an area of land was set aside for a township in 1865. The town was gazetted in 1868 and later named by the Government surveyor of the day, Mr WA Tully, after his hometown in Ireland.
