Pop 4,008. (235km NE Adelaide). See map on page 12?14, ref E3. There is a gorgeous riverfront with plenty of space for picnics and includes floating wharf platforms. It has many fine restaurants and eateries. The name Berri comes from the Aboriginal description of "wide bend in river" on which the town has grown. Until the 1870s it was part of the Cobdogla sheep station and the home of the Erawirunga Aborigines. It was then just one of the hundreds of woodpiles along the river, used by the riverboats for refuelling. In 1911 the first irrigation blocks were allocated to the first permanent settlers. FESTIVALS: Berri Easter Carnival (Easter), Cycling Tour of the Riverland (May), Riverland Wine & Food Festival (Oct), Riverland Special School Craft Fair (Nov). ACCESS: Car via the Sturt Hwy.
