Pop 426. (165km NE Adelaide). See map on page 12?14, ref B1. Popular tourist area. The centre for local primary industries of wheat, sheep and fruit growing. Morgan was passed by Charles Sturt on his voyage down the River Murray and became settled in 1830. Known as Nor West Bend, the Great Bend or the Great Elbow, it became a stop for overlanders on their way with stock. In 1878, the town was proclaimed and the Kapunda to Morgan railway officially opened. In its heyday, Morgan was the largest inland port in Australia. Long queues of laden steamers and barges were a common sight. Their cargo was discharged into trains and transported to Adelaide. There were 6 trains daily. ACCESS: Car via the Sturt Hwy.
