(67km N Brisbane) The major tourist centre on Bribie Island which is a part of Caboolture Shire, offering the still waters of Pumicestone Passage, extensive sandy beaches, boating, fishing and a new jetty capable of taking craft up to 120 tonne. . Matthew Flinders took on his travels an Aboriginal named 'Bungaree' from the Sydney area, and together they stepped ashore on Bribie Island which Flinders thought was part of the mainland. Bungaree was later given a military uniform and a supply of cocked hats by the Governor of Sydney and he wore them with pride. After the first jetty was on the island in 1912, a township was surveyed and given the name of Bongaree.
