Pop Part of Sydney. (8km E Sydney) Eastern beachside suburb with a laid back lifestyle and a number of restaurants and cafes. Rambling over the cliffs and swimming at Wylies Baths are popular with visitors. Coogee's charms have long beguiled artists including Tom Roberts and Arthur Streeton and in Edwardian times was one of the foremost seaside resorts in Sydney, sporting its own aquarium and pier. The beach at Coogee is relatively gentle compared with others along this stretch of coast, with often bay-like swimming conditions. Initially visited by Europeans in the 1830s for fishing and hunting. The name Coogee is derived from the Aboriginal expression for the odour of seaweed on the beach at high tide. Gazetted as a village in July 1838. By 1874 several hundred people resided in the area. In 1905 a surf life saving club was established at Coogee. The first Australian combined male and female public swimming pool (Wylie's Baths) was opened in December 1907. A Brighton style amusement pier was built in 1928 stretching 183m into the ocean. In 1929 a steel shark proof net was erected to join the pier for swimming and the entry fee was one penny. The net survived until WW II. Coogee rivalled Manly as a recreational coastal resort.
