Pop 275. (120km N Hobart). See map on page 1?8, ref N14. One of the oldest bridges in Australia spans the Macquarie River at this classified historic township. Ross was established in 1812 as a military post for the protection of travellers who once stopped there to change coaches. Today it is still an important stopping place on the Heritage Hwy between Launceston and Hobart. The four corners of the intersection of Church and Bridge Sts at the centre of town represent temptation (hotel), recreation (town hall), salvation (church) and damnation (goal, now a residence).
