Pop 4,800. (360km SW Brisbane) An attractive and busy country town on the Macintyre River, on the QLD/NSW border. The town was discovered by explorer Allan Cunningham in 1827, and its name comes from the Aboriginal word 'goonawinna' which means 'resting place of the birds'. It is the centre of a wool, beef cattle, horse breeding and timber milling district. Marvellous river fishing area.
