Pop 4,026. (146km NNW Adelaide). See map on page 14?14, ref D3. The largest town of the Yorke Peninsula. Once a thriving copper mining area, it now serves a large farming community. Many old stone homes and buildings remain in the town. Copper was discovered in 1859 in what became known as Wallaroo Mines and the township of Kadina sprang up about 2km east of the mines area. When the copper mines ceased in the 1920s, many miners went farming. FESTIVALS: Kernewek Lowender or Cornish festival (biennial, odd yrs).
