The miners were mainly Cornishmen and their skills at building are still very much in evidence. Originally named Tiparra, copper was discovered here in 1861. The Moonta Mining Company was set up soon after by Captain Walter Hughes. The rich copper mine was the first mine in Australia to pay one million pounds in dividends.
